A HOME is being sought for a remarkable piece of embroidery work which was one of the centre pieces of the recent Battle of Gheluvelt commemorations in Worcester.

On October 31, the centenary of the battle that changed the course of the First World War, a special service was held in Gheluvelt Park, Worcester, supported by various organisations with exhibits and stalls.

One display in the Friends of Gheluvelt marquee was by the Venture Group No 1, one of a group of four of the Embroiderers Guild Worcester branch. Among their embroidery work they had created a poppy wall where members of the public were invited to write labels with the names of family members who fell and fought in the First World War.

The wall was first on display in Worcester Cathedral, during the Three Choirs Festival as an impact centre piece for the exhibition 'urface, Space and Time covering the decade 1910 – 1920. It has also been on display at Badsey and Hallow churches and St George's church, Worcester for their Remembrance Sunday services. It has also been on display at the Fold craft centre at Bransford.

After the centenary day at Gheluvelt Park, the ladies who worked on the wall wanted to honour the memory of the soldiers of the Second Battalion, the Worcestershire Regiment who were killed in action at Gheluvelt by adding their names from the Roll of Honour at the interpretative feature in the park to the poppy wall. To commemorate the addition of the names, the standards from Worcester Branch of the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association attended a viewing of the wall to pay their respects and congratulate the ladies on their hard work in creating the embroidery display.

Harry Massam, branch chairman, said “ The magnificent work of the ladies from the embroidery group will go a long way in making sure that people remember the sacrifices of all those, soldiers and civilians who went through the First World War.”

The ladies of embroidery Venture Group No 1 are now looking for a permanent home for their poppy wall, where it can be put on full time display. They can be contacted on: jac@shail.co.uk
