BUSINESSMAN Roger Wilkins steamed off into the sunset of retirement with a big party in a marquee on College Green at Worcester Cathedral.

A partner at property firm Halls – for which he will still consult part time – Mr Wilkins also had a lifelong interest in steam engines and served as professional land agent for the Severn Valley Railway since qualifying in 1976. He also worked as a volunteer on a Welsh narrow gauge railway and as national advisor on rating matters to the Heritage Railway Association.

Fellow Halls partner Jason Clines said: "Roger has brought huge energy and enthusiasm to everything he has done, both professionally and outside work. He has earned the right to put his feet up a little, though I just can't see Roger slowing down at all. We all wish him well."

Mr Wilkins spent 17 years at the helm of his own property agency before joining forces in 2013 with Halls. During that period, the chartered surveyor was chairman of the Worcestershire Area of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He sold, let and managed commercial property, conducted property valuations, acquisitions, disposals, rent reviews and lease renewal negotiations, as well as provided rating advice and appeals and served as an expert property witness.

He served on the Worcestershire Council of the Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce, and was passionately keen on promoting Worcestershire business. He was also an active folk musician and led his folk dance band The Falconers for 40 years, playing for dances and festivals including the prestigious Sidmouth festival last year. Mr Wilkins continues as vice chairman of Bromyard Gala, the Herefordshire show and traction engine rally, which was started many years ago by his father John.
