MEMBERS of Herefordshire Burns Club were presented with something to get their teeth into by a local furniture retailer to help celebrate the birthday of Scotland's national poet.

Anthony Nearly, manager of Oak Furniture Land store in Hereford, gifted the club's Burn's Night celebrations a life-size replica bagpipe cake created by cake artist Annabel De Vetten-Peterson, who is famous for her realistic life-size cake creations.

Made of red velvet sponge, the cake took four days to complete and contained more than 2kg of modelling chocolate, 1kg of vanilla filling and all the pipes and robe were made from 1kg of modelling chocolate. In addition all the poems were on edible paper and the creation was so heavy, it had to be carried in by two people.

Mr Nearly said the retailer had presented the gift to mark the opening of its Hereford store, which is its eighth in the Midlands. The cake was auctioned on the night and made £160, with the money going to charity
