Terminator: Genisys is to be a retelling of the original Terminator film – but with a big twist on the character of Sarah Connor.

The twist in the plot of the fifth Terminator movie has been revealed by Entertainment Weekly, who have unveiled first look images from the film on their cover.

Terminator Genisys will follow the plot of the original 1984 film, which saw Kyle Reese sent back in time to save Sarah Connor from being killed by the Terminator who’s trying to stop her from giving birth to John Connor – the future leader of the resistance.

But when Kyle – played by Divergent’s Jai Courtney – gets back to 1984 he finds that Sarah (Game Of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke) is not the innocent woman she was when Linda Hamilton played her in the original.

Sarah has been orphaned at the age of nine and raised by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator, who she calls “Pops”, who has been trained to guard, not kill. So Sarah is now a highly-trained antisocial recluse who can fight for her own survival but knows little about human emotion.

So rather than save her Kyle must get close to her in order to father John Connor and save the world.

Alan Taylor, who previously took the reins on Game Of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World, will direct Terminator: Genisys, which will be released in UK cinemas in July 2015.

The film will lead to two more sequels as part of a new trilogy, which will follow in 2017 and 2018.
