Popstar Will Young has said he sought professional help after realising an inflated ego meant he had become “a bit of a dick”.

The Leave Right Now singer, who rose to fame by winning Pop Idol in 2002 over Gareth Gates, said his life was spiralling out of control as he battled with his new-found celebrity.

He told the Sunday Mirror’s Notebook magazine: “I became a bit of a dick. And I realised I had to stop being a dick or else I’d lose my job.

“My ego just got too big and I was insecure. People were allowing me to act like a kid, but now no-one ever would.”

The 36-year-old, who has openly suffered from depression and addiction during his career, said therapy helped him deal with issues connected to his fame.

Will, who has just released his sixth studio album 85% Proof, also revealed that he has started using dating websites to meet a new man.

He told Notebook magazine: “Why the hell shouldn’t I use a dating site? Just because I’m famous, it doesn’t mean I can’t do it.

“I’m busy and it’s a great way to meet people. I’ll do what I bloody like.”
