Luke Cage star Mike Colter will be “staying away” from social media and fan reviews when the new Marvel series arrives on Netflix on Friday.

The actor, who played the role of the superhero in Marvel’s Jessica Jones as a supporting character, is now the star of his own live-action series based on the original character of the same name.

Luke Cage follows in the footsteps of Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter, and Daredevil, starring Charlie Cox, as Marvel and Netflix continue their franchise surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s iconic comic book superheroes: another two will follow, Iron Fist and The Defenders mini-series.

Mike’s Luke Cage is a former convict who has acquired superhuman strength and bulletproof skin after being in an experiment that went wrong.

Following his previous storyline in Jessica Jones in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, he has now moved to Harlem and is trying to get on with normal, human life, but things crop up and he is left fighting to protect his city against the likes of villain Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes.

Despite early reviews from critics largely praising the series, Mike does not want to face the most important critics of all – the fans – who will be commenting in their droves as all 13 episodes will be available to watch on the streaming service at once.

He told the Press Association: “The work is done; it is what it is. You do the work and you hope people like it, and if they don’t, don’t read it. I don’t read reviews.

“I don’t have social media so I’ll stay away from that, it’s easy.”

Mike is filled with confidence about Luke Cage, but has said he only hopes it can be “second” best behind critical success Jessica Jones.

He said: “The night Jessica Jones premiered, and I went on set (for Luke Cage) the next day, I was like, ‘Right guys, it was nice, we can stop trying too hard now, the very best we can do now is come second place’.

“We can never top Jessica, the bar has been set so high.”

Filming Luke Cage was a physically and emotionally draining process, he said, in part due to the all-hours filming schedule he and his colleagues frequently faced.

He said: “We have a lot of stunts so physically it’s very draining. People don’t get that it’s two in the morning when we’re doing these scenes.

“Your body would love to be in bed. And you have this page-and-a-half-long speech or an action sequence, time is ticking and you’ve got to get this shot and the last thing you want to do is fight choreography.”

He joked: “That’s why they claim to pay us the big bucks!”

Luke Cage also stars House Of Cards’ Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, Simone Missick as Misty Knight and Theo Rossi as “Shades” Alvarez.

The series has been overseen by showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and executive producer and Marvel’s head of TV Jeph Loeb.

Luke Cage premieres on Netflix on September 30.
