IF you want to encounter really grumpy old women, Cheltenham is the place to go, apparently.

Other strong contenders, including Shrewsbury and Coventry, are not quite in the same sour league, according to a recent fun “YouGrump” survey.

And the good news is, it will soon to possible to not only meet genuine grumpy old women on the streets of the elegant spa town, local people can also see them in action on stage, at The Everyman.

The show, Grumpy Old Women to the Rescue will come to the venue on April 9 and the following day.

A spokesman said: “Perrier Award winning comedian, writer and star of Grumpy Old Women, Jenny Eclair will be joined by return of original cast member Olivier Award-nominated actor, singer and comedian Dillie Keane (Fascinating Aida) and new recruit, actor and comedian Lizzie Roper (Hollyoaks Ch4, Boy Meets Girl BBC Two) in this brand-new show.

“Fed up with flogging their guts out and always having to be in charge, the Grumpy Old Women have put their knobbly old feet up in glorious retirement, free at last to practise their extreme colouring-in, ukelele orchestra and novelty fudge-making.”

As you do.

The spokesman added: “With the world in a bigger mess than ever before, is there anything that can tempt them off their backsides to unleash their superpowers and once more come to the rescue ?”

In the meantime, what about Cheltenham’s real-life “grumpy” credentials?

Apparent factors in the poll included identifying those who are most susceptible to a growing frustration with new technology, and that includes those new-fangled self-service tills, and feeling increasingly undetectable: while taking higher-than-average joy from large pants, meal deals and Pilates.
