Offenham set for Wake celebrations
SATURDAY will see the culmination of a week of celebrations in Offenham as Wake Day finally arrives.
Villagers have already enjoyed a whole range of activities in the run-up to Saturday's festivities including live music, a treasure hunt, an art competition, rounders tournament, one-mile race and the Great Wake Drake Race.
Wake Day begins at 1pm with a performance by the church bell ringers and then Main Street will be closed off to traffic to herald the start of the entertainment.
The street fair opens at 2.15pm and offers produce, cakes, skittles, tombola and swing boats as well as a licensed bar, teas and barbecue. Entertainment highlights of the afternoon will be a children's fancy dress competition, childrens Maypole dancing, the Offenham Lady Maypole Dancers and Thomas Trilby the gentleman juggler.
The day holds a particular significance for five young girls in the village. This years Wake Queen is Nicola Griffiths, aged 14, and she has four attendants in Poppy Walton, nine, Lauren King, eight, Elena Nash, six and Lydia Barnet, also six, who will all take centre-stage tomorrow.
Offenham Wake 2007 comes to a close on Sunday (10) with a junior five-a-side football tournament, open to children between the ages of six and 15. The tournament is affiliated to the FA and teams need to be registered by 10.30am in the morning. To enter a team, call Ron Jury on 01386 48914.
