Traders threatened by parking charges
PLANS to increase parking charges across the district by 40 per cent could drive traders out of Evesham if Wychavon District Council approves the proposal next week, it has been claimed.
The proposed increase of 20p will be discussed by the full council on Tuesday (11) and if ratified be brought into force in the area from April 1 next year.
But one trader has already signalled if this happens, he will close his shop and move elsewhere.
Alex Mellor, owner of Surfantix on the High Street, said: "I am thinking of closing if the plans go ahead. The lease is up for renewal and one of the reasons I am considering pulling out of Evesham is because of the parking situation. It's ridiculous."
Gerry O'Donnell, who represents the town council on the Vale of Evesham Commerce and Tourism Association committee, said although it was regrettable plans were in place to increase charges, research has shown it will not determine footfall in the town.
"A number of studies of parking in market towns have shown that parking charges alone will not deter shoppers if the retail offer is a good one," he said.
"It is the standard of shops and range that determines footfall. It is regrettable if traders feel they have to move on."
But Mr Mellor said the increase would stop people coming into the town.
He added: ""Less people will come shopping in Evesham if this happens, I am sure of that. They should be encouraging people here rather than putting them off."
Lew Hammond, market town partnership manager, said: "Parking has got to be right in the town centre and I would hope to get the best possible format for the town."
He said traders will be invited to the January VECTA meeting and will be able to make their feelings known and discuss the situation.
