Lucky not to lose eye
A YOUNG apprentice came within an inch of losing his eye in a vicious street assault in Evesham town centre.
Apprentice electrician Charlie Stanley was knocked to the ground unconscious as a beer glass was thrust into his face in the early hours of the morning.
In an exclusive interview with the Journal, he said: "It just came out of the blue. I had no time to react. I was knocked out cold."
When he came to in the early hours of Sunday morning last week, he was taken by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital where he was detained for almost eight hours. Doctors inserted 13 stitches in the wounds around his left eye.
"Another inch and my eye could have gone," he said. "In that sense I was very lucky."
Charlie, 18, had been out drinking with friends on the Saturday evening before the attack.
"We left the Ambassador Club in Avon Street to go home about 1am," he said. "My mates had gone on ahead to a pizza place to get something to eat.
"I was walking up the road towards the High Street on my own when I met this other youth and we got talking. Everything was fine until without any warning he shoved the glass into my face."
The incident sparked a major police investigation and a youth was arrested later the same day. He has since been bailed while inquiries continue.
Police have renewed appeals for another youth they are particularly keen to interview.
He is described as aged about 17, with short brown hair, of medium height and slim build.
Inspector Steve Brooker, who is in charge of policing in south Worcestershire, said street violence in the area appeared to have tailed off over the past few years.
He said assaults with weapons such as glasses, bottles, knives and baseball bats were still uncommon.
"Obviously assaults like this cause us great concern," he added.
Charlie said: "You read about all these random attacks in the papers but you don't expect it to happen here in Evesham. It seems it's just the way the world is going."
