Parking fines rise and drive-aways targeted
PARKING fines for some offenders in Wychavon district are set to rise from the end of the month, it was revealed this week.
Drivers who park on double yellow lines or single yellow lines when restrictions are in force and those who use disabled parking spaces will, in future, face a fine of £70 instead of the present £60.
Those who overstay their time in council car parks, however, will face a fine of £50 in future. Both fines will be reduced by half if paid within 14 days.
The changes will be introduced by the Traffic Management Act 2004 which comes into effect next Monday. There will also be a change of name for traffic wardens, who will in future be known as civil enforcement officers.
Drivers who flee the scene of an offence before the ticket can be issued will have them sent through the post, warned the council's parking services manager Christine Baxter.
"There will be new infringements that our team will have to enforce such as parking on zig-zag lines at crossing points, parking across dropped kerbs or parking on footpaths," she said.
"In order to achieve fairness to all offenders, those who quickly drive away at the point of penalty charge issue will receive their fine served through the post.
"However, if the motorist returns to the vehicle prior to the fine being issued they may only receive a verbal warning, if they then remove the vehicle."
The lower parking charge will also be applied to vehicles which overstay the limit on off-street parking such as that provided along the length of Evesham High Street.
