Work vital for our economy

Thank you for reporting the problems that growers in the Vale are likely to face at harvest time because of the reduction in the number of seasonal agricultural workers coming from abroad (Concern about seasonal workers rule change, Evesham Journal, April 24, 2008).

Those seasonal workers who are able to come will make a valuable contribution to the local economy. I do hope that they will feel welcome here.

I get very upset by hostility towards immigrants. I am convinced that they contribute at least as much to our economy as they take out. But even if they don't: Do we value human beings according to the economic contribution that they make to society? Do we value people according to their country of origin? If the answer is yes in either case, I fear that we are on the road that ends at the gas chambers.

Gordon Matthews, Prospective parliamentary candidate for the Green Party, Evesham.

Its nothing to do with ethnicity or country of origin, its about cheap labour, these people are being used to keep down the wages of our own workers. They also add to the pressures on The NHS and other services. The answer is to promote the work ethic here, with decent pay and conditions.

First I must agree with Mr Payne, but secondary Mr Matthews misses the bigger picture. These migrants have to be housed, they have to use the NHS, and all the pressures that fall onto the other sevices. The Lords have just stated migrants dont bring a vast amount to the economy.I wrote in this newspaper last year that they they contribute very little to the Evesham economy as 80% of their wages are sent home to their own country. Professor R Rowthorn, professor of economics, states and I quote, there is now evidence any large scale immigration generates large scale economic benefits to the country.
