Post office move cancelled

EVESHAM Post Office will not be moving from its High Street premises after it was unable to find a suitable location to operate from.

It was hoped the counter would relocate to a more central position in the town in a bid to revamp the service and give Evesham a boost.

A building in Market Square had been considered as a possible new home for the post office, however it was revealed this week that the plans have been scrapped.

A Post Office Limited spokesman said: "It was being considered to move the post office but it is no longer going ahead."

Sub-postmaster Matthew Bumphrey had hoped a move into the town centre would give the post office a opportunity to be a major retailer in Evesham.

The post office has seen a rapid decline over the last three years due to changes such as pensions no longer being issued over the counter and increasing numbers of people buying their car tax via the internet.

Mr Bumphrey said: "I would have liked to have moved but the decision was made in the end not to. It's business as usual."
