THE head of Prince Henry's High School has paid tribute to those stranded at the school during last summer's floods and thanked parents and staff for their support.

As well as celebrating academic successes, head teacher Bernard Robert's annual speech at the school last Friday recounted the school's own experiences at that terrible time and paid homage to those staff and students who helped one another, often in very difficult circumstances, after people became trapped at the height of the floods last July.

He said: "This is a good occasion to recognise publicly the hardship and difficulties that the floods created and indeed is still creating for several Prince Henry's families.

"It also gives me the opportunity to recall the help and support which we as a school received from parents and from staff, several of whom were stranded here overnight and well into the next day.

"I would also like to thank the pupils who were stranded with us for the way they conducted themselves, even though they were undoubtedly worried about their homes and parents."

Mr Roberts went on to say that their year had been defined by a spirit of self improvement that followed on from their outstanding' 2007 Ofsted report and also manifested itself in some excellent exam results.

Pupils from A2 and AS-Level recorded the highest percentage of A and B grades ever, Key Stage 3 results were among the best in the country and GCSE results, while down on the previous year, were still very strong.

Mr Roberts added: "This has been a very good year for Prince Henry's and I for one am proud of the achievements of this school, its staff and pupils."
