Traders are helping to light up town
CHRISTMAS lights will shine even brighter in Evesham this year thanks to a donation from the town’s traders.
Vale of Evesham Commerce and Tourism Association (VECTA) has given £1,000 to the town council towards the festive display.
In a letter to Stuart Carter, clerk at Evesham Town Council, Tony Rowland – chairman of VECTA – said that at a recent meeting, traders agreed their turnover increased by between 10 per cent and 30 per cent during the months of November and December. He said it was only right the money, which was generated during the town’s Pie and Ale Festival, be used for the “furtherance of trade within the town centre”.
Mr Carter said the money would be used to hire a new set of lights for the Port Street area. Speaking of the donation, he said: “It’s excellent – it’s good for Port Street and it’s good for the town.”
The town’s lights will be illuminated as part of a day of entertainment beginning at 11am on Saturday, November 17. A market, Christmas craft fair, Victorian penny arcade, Christmas carols and live music will be on offer.
Father Christmas will be in his grotto from 11am to 2.30pm and the switch-on takes place at 5.30pm, followed by fireworks.
