A BROADWAY man carried a heavy load across the Malvern Hills in aid of two charities.

George Anstey, of High Street, strapped a washing machine weighing 82.6 kilos to his back and trekked the 12.2 miles in support of Cardiac Risk in the Young and Experiment in International Living.

The challenge took six hours and 45 minutes and Mr Anstey raised £1,760, nearly double the amount he was hoping for.

The 28-year-old said: “It was tiring. I started at 8am and finished at 2.45pm. I ascended the Worcestershire Beacon twice during the day.

“It was misty and cold, but the sun soon burned through and thankfully it turned out to be a lovely day, if a bit windy at the top of the beacon. It was pretty tough all day long, but I kept on saying to myself ‘never ever give up’.

I think I’ll take this attitude into the future. The whole process has been pretty enlightening.

“The seven months of training was definitely worth it and the pain on the day was worth it. It was really good raising money for causes I believe in and also prove people who thought I couldn’t do it wrong.”
