UPDATE: 8pm - A44 re-opens following crash

Update: 8pm - A44 is now open in both directions

A MAN has been flown to hospital with broken legs and a suspected fractured pelvis after a car ended up on its roof following a crash with a van.

The A44 Evesham Road was closed between the B4084 Egdon Lane north of Pershore and Spetchley crossroads following the crash outside the Nightingale pub at Sneachill, near Worcester, at about 3.20pm.

Ambulance crews were able to free the passenger of the Nissan Note, who had abdominal injuries, and driver of the Citroen Relay van, who had a suspected fractured breastbone.

Both were then taken by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle for an hour and had to be freed from the car by fire crews.

He was stabilised before being flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The driver of the car, a man in his fifties, had been trapped in his vehicle for about an hour.

“A trainee paramedic who was on an observational shift with the area support officer held the driver’s head still and reassured him while work was done to free him from the vehicle.

“He had lower limb fractures and suspected pelvic and head injuries. He was flown to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

“The car’s passenger, a woman in her thirties, had abdominal injuries. She was released from the vehicle on a spinal board and was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by land ambulance.

“The driver of the van had a suspected fractured breastbone with resulting difficulties in breathing. He was taken by land ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.”
