Cannabis addict grew plants worth £2,400
AN Evesham man who has used cannabis medicinally for the past 30 years was caught growing plants with an estimated street value of nearly £2,500 at his home.
Police attended David Haywood’s address in Littleworth Walk on January 5 following reports of a domestic incident.
Prosecutor Kerry Lovegrove said during a search of the property officers found an enclosed, sheeted-off area and there was a strong smell of cannabis. Police found eight green herbal plants of varying sizes from six inches to two feet.
Haywood, aged 46, pleaded guilty to producing a controlled drug of class B when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court.
Miss Lovegrove said the plants had an estimated yield of 240g and a street value of £2,400 if sold individually.
Haywood told police he was an alcoholic and was addicted to cannabis.
He said the cannabis was for his own use and not for resale.
Mark Sheward, defending, said: “He is 46 and has been a user of cannabis for a number of years. He doesn’t use it recreationally now, he uses it to get by. It calms him.
“The cost of buying it was becoming difficult to cope with so he decided to grow his own.”
Haywood, who is already subject to a three-month curfew between 7pm and 7am, had it extended by six weeks and was ordered to pay £85 costs.
Magistrates also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the plants.

Cannabis is less addictive than caffeine, yet we dont call the people who serve coffee in starbucks drug-dealers, nor do we call their customers addicts, even if they turn up daily.

Dr. Jack E. Henningfield of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Dr. Neal L. Benowitz of the University of California at San Francisco ranked six psychoactive substances on five criteria.
Withdrawal -- The severity of withdrawal symptoms produced by stopping the use of the drug.
Reinforcement -- The drug's tendency to induce users to take it again and again.
Tolerance -- The user's need to have ever-increasing doses to get the same effect.
Dependence -- The difficulty in quitting, or staying off the drug, the number of users who eventually become dependent
Intoxication -- The degree of intoxication produced by the drug in typical use.
The tables listed below show the rankings given for each of the drugs. Overall, their evaluations for the drugs are very consistent. It is notable that marijuana ranks below caffeine in most addictive criteria, while alcohol and tobacco are near the top of the scale in many areas.
The rating scale is from 1 to 6 --- 1 denotes the drug with the strongest addictive tendencies, while 6 denotes the drug with the least addictive tendencies.

Cannabis is safer and less addictive than either alcohol or tobacco.
It's time for the UK government to stop wasting our taxes with their criminalisation of cannabis consumers, who are otherwise law-abiding and productive citizens.

Just in case: this post is sarcastic.

In contrast cannabis is safer and less toxic than virtually all OTC and POM medicines.
It's good to see such a light sentence but really it makes no sense at all to prosecute anyone fro this so-called 'crime'.
As for the cheap, sensationalist, misleading newspaper coverage, we expect nothing less from the scum that is the British press.
