"Snow? What snow?" Worcester is wet, wet, wet

Evesham Journal: "Snow? What snow?" Worcester is wet, wet, wet "Snow? What snow?" Worcester is wet, wet, wet

PREDICTIONS of snow proved largely unfounded as Worcester faced a wet weekend instead.

The gritters may have been on standby but the weekend proved more of a washout than a winter wonderland as the county faced downpours.

Today there were 10 flood warnings in the region but none affecting Worcestershire.

The Met office said there would be further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow tonight but it would be quite variable with regards to accumulations. The prediction said the rain and snow would tend to become lighter towards dawn, with a patchy frost developing and icy stretches with a minimum temperature of -1 °C.

Yesterday Worcestershire County Council issued a statement warning drivers to be careful of ice.

The gritting team, who have been on standby this weekend, are ready to act as needed tonight.

The council has warned drivers never to assume it is safe to travel at normal speeds, even if they believe roads have been treated with grit, and should be prepared to allow more time for their journey tomorrow morning.

There is also the potential for outbreaks of further sleet or snow on Monday morning, the Met office said.

Jon Fraser, Worcestershire County Council's highways customer and community manager, said: "We are monitoring the situation closely and our gritters are ready to take action as needed this evening.

"With the potential for freezing temperatures overnight, we are asking motorists both this evening and Monday morning to be vigilant due to the risk of ice and to temper their driving to the conditions."
