Sign clocks 12,000 Evesham motorists over speed limit in first week
12:50pm Thursday 28th February 2013 in News By Sarah Taylor
DETERRENT: Councillor John Smith with the sign.
A NEW vehicle activated sign in Evesham clocked more than 12,000 speeding drivers in the first week it was installed.
The equipment was put in place on Pershore Road in Hampton on Sunday, February 17 and when it was checked a week later it revealed the large number of motorists who had passed the sign travelling faster than the road’s 30mph speed limit.
With 10,080 minutes in a week, the 12,000 speeding drivers represent the equivalent of more than one driver breaking the speed limit every minute, throughout the seven-day period.
Councillor John Smith, ward representative for Hampton and cabinet member for highways and transport on Worcestershire County Council, installed the camera himself having used some of his divisional funding allocation to buy the sign following complaints from concerned residents.
He said he was surprised by how many vehicles had been registered speeding in just one week.
“I installed the camera on Sunday, February 17, at around midday,” he said.
“I went and checked it on Friday morning to see it was working and it was around 9,000. I took a note and reset it. I went down later and it read 808 so there is no doubt it’s working. They are very accurate and record anyone travelling at more than 30mph. Whilst this is not a speed camera, it is a good warning mechanism to reinforce to drivers they are now in a 30mph speed limit area.
“It is about awareness. I have watched vehicles slow down once it flashed at them.
“I am extremely pleased we put it in. It may stop an accident and one accident is too many.
“This initiative is already having the desired effect and the sign can be relocated to other roads within the area, where residents may have concerns with speeding vehicles.”

“It is about awareness. I have watched vehicles slow down once it flashed at them" - Exactly. All the benefit of a speed camera without ripping off motorists. Let's use these instead
Don't be persuaded into thinking that speed cameras have anything to do with speeding.
How about we don't pay huge amounts for flashing signs and speed cameras and put more police in vehicles to address all forms of poor driving including inappropriate use of speed?

Speed limits right across the board need to be reviewed.
Hard to believe in the era of ABS etc etc that our motorways still have an official limit of 70mph.

@04smallmj - pavements are for people, roads are for cars.

Most residential areas should be 20mph by default, with the exception being 30mph. Having a road of speeding cars can be a nightmare for those living there, what with the noise, the difficulty in crossing, the worry of accidents, etc. Is it really such a pain to slow down when going through a residential area such as this.
It's just a shame that Cllr. John Smith didn't think that the similar concerns of residents on Bilford Road were worth considering, despite the hundreds of signatures that we gave to him asking for an investigation into ways of improving the safety of this road for residents.

Lowering the speed limit to the absolutely absurd 20 mph spoken about will just lead to the sign wearing out !

If you believe you're safe exceeding the speed limit because you have some deluded ideal that you're "A great driver" then please send your driving license to DVLA to have it revoked!

Also, a while ago, i got to watch people leaving a drivers training course held for those drivers who can't read speed limit signs, and, as they left, a good many of them were driving off whilst talking on a mobile phone, quite obviously texting or eating or drinking. So, i gather from this, that a good percentage of those drivers who get caught speeding are quite often those that really don't give a hoot about, or take any notice of, any other rules of the road!

Since all the speed cameras in Swindon were switched off the number of accidents have decreased, probably because everyone is now looking where they are going instead of looking at their speedometers
The town became the first English local authority to decommission fixed cameras, although it decided to maintain mobile cameras used by police.
In reply to a question from Yahoo, Taxpayers’ Alliance campaign director Emma Boon said: “This is more evidence that speed cameras are not the answer to making Britain's roads safer. The cameras result in fines that represent a significant burden on drivers on the basis of how fast they are driving on one stretch of road, but we need a broader, more effective approach to road safety policy."
“Local authorities should follow Swindon’s example and move to focus on other road safety measures aside from speed”.

Saying that the article has similar assumptions with lack of info. "I went and checked it on Friday morning to see it was working and it was around 9,000. I took a note and reset it. I went down later and it read 808 so there is no doubt it’s working". Theres no doubt the counter is increasing with time, no proof its working correctly unless someone monitored those 808 cars with a speed gun!
Driver behaviour with these flashing signs (as at most things) confuses me. There are a lot of these signs around now and you see people brake before them then speed up after. Do they think they are speed cameras, or think its ok to speed if nothing flashes at you?

I actually like these signs, the one local to me, on Woodgreen drive, I never took any notice of it until I saw the reports of how often it is tripped.

You don't send your licence back to have it revoked, just so you know, that would be called surrendering your licence.

Then, the government don't set speed limits, they are set locally, the government actually suggest that the speed limit is set at the 85th precentile, in case you don't know what that is, it is the speed that 85% of drivers will not exceed driving along that stretch of road, and until "new labour", that is how they were set.
.
On the road I mentioned, Woodgreen drive, the local department actually responsible for setting that limit have twice recommended it be raised to 40 mph, the local do gooders are having none of this of course.

MotorVehicles seem to be the last consideration in the setting of speed limits in this modern world, rather than the first, which is the world I grew up in.
