COUNCIL chiefs have confirmed work to replace Abbey Bridge in Evesham is still on track.

Some residents had become worried the project had been delayed after seeing information stating lane closures on the bridge would be in place until February next year – four months after the expected October finish.

A letter in this week’s Journal raised the concerns, but Peter Blake, head of integrated transport at Worcestershire County Council, said it was standard practice to take out road notice closures for longer than the work should take, just in case there are delays.

He said: “The Abbey Bridge scheme is still working to the same timeframe. Severe weather and the meeting of certain planning conditions has meant things have taken longer to start with, but parts of the original programme have been altered and we're still working with contractors towards the original completion date.”

The work will take a step forward on Saturday as main construction works begin. One lane, initially on the West side, will be closed over Abbey Bridge and the viaduct from Saturday.

Representatives from the company rebuilding the bridge, Hochtief, will be available for questions at the Vale of Evesham Commerce and Tourism Association annual general meeting at the Evesham Hotel on Thursday, March 21, from 6pm.

it is appalling how the council have drip fed the public of Evesham information throughout this process - they have treated the public with utter contempt - and, any information which has come out has only done so as a result of queries, questions and enquiries, it certainly hasn't been freely given.......the council should hang their heads in shame - it certainly hasn't been a democratic process......
