THE famous stocks in Stow’s square could be replaced by a replica.

The listed monument is falling apart and Stow Town Council applied to Cotswold District Council for its temporary removal for repairs.

However, English Heritage has objected.

Spkesman Simon Ramsden said: “The repairs involve the replacement of substantial portions.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings may advise on more appropriate repair techniques.

“If this were not possible, there might be a case of replacing the stocks with an honest replica in its current location.”

Stow councillor Alun White said he wanted the genuine article to stay.

He said: “They are a Stow landmark. I don’t think there’s a single tourist that doesn’t get their photo taken with them.”
