TWENTY-seven new homes will be built in Hampton directly opposite a planned development of 400 homes.

The application to build the dwellings at Merrybrook Farm in Pershore Road by Trevita Homes was waved through by planners last Thursday, despite local opposition.

Councillor John Smith, who lives near the site of the development, said he was worried about the volume of traffic.

“Until you drive along this road regularly no one appreciates how many people use it,” said the councillor, who recently installed a vehicle activated sign inside the 30mph zone that had clocked 16,000 speeding drivers within a week.

He added: “This is development outside the South Worcestershire Development Plan – 400 houses opposite, 150 on Peewit Road, and yet another here.

“I think it is absolutely over the top, why we have the SWDP I don’t know.” Coun Reg Jakeman added: “If this does go through it will be welcome to Pershore Road car park.”

But speaking in support of the application Coun Margaret Rowley said: “This does fill in a little area next to the development boundary.”

The application was approved by Wychavon District Council’s planning committee with nine councillors in favour and four against.
