FRIENDS and family members paid their respects to a former Evesham mayor at his funeral.

More than 100 people attended St Peter’s Church, Bengeworth, on Friday to bid farewell to Keith Sinclair, who died aged 85 on March 31.

Born in Evesham, Mr Sinclair attended Bengeworth School, leaving at 14 to join his father in the building business at D.J. Sinclair and Sons Builders Ltd.

He was elected to Evesham Town Council in 1972, representing the east ward, and became Mayor of Evesham in 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

Mr Sinclair is perhaps best known for his part in securing the approval of Evesham bypass after leading a delegation to London to lobby Downing Street.

He was also a president of the Builders’ Trades Employers Federation and a member of Evesham Rowing Club.
