Trapped boaters rescued at bridge
9:00am Monday 19th August 2013 in News
TWO narrowboats failed to safely negotiate Bidford Bridge and were trapped before the fire service was called out to free them.
Warwickshire firefighters were called at 12.24pm on Wednesday, August 7, after receiving a call that two boats had got stuck at the bridge with people on board and in distress.
One appliance from Bidford and one from Alcester attended at 12.37pm with water rescue boats from Rugby Fire Station.
There were no people in the water but three people and two dogs were still on the boats and required rescuing.
It is believed the second boat had come to the aid of the first but had also got stuck trying to push the first boat clear.
Eventually, some youngsters tried to lend a hand in a third boat but were unable to move the two trapped boats.
The rescue boats from Rugby were launched and both narrowboats were freed with the help of a farmer using a tractor and lines.
The fire service said three people and two dogs were taken to dry land with no injuries reported.
