Katy's muddy run for MS sufferers
A BROADWAY woman is gearing up to battle through thick mud, swim through lakes and run across challenging woodland to raise money for a good cause.
Katy Hackling is taking on the 10k Wolf Run, held near Leamington Spa, on Sunday to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The 23-year-old decided she wanted to attempt the challenge because her dad, Keith Wixon, aged 63, has suffered for decades with MS after he was diagnosed with the condition in his 20s.
“The last few years have been quite bad,” she said.
“He just about managed to walk me down the aisle last year with walking sticks and me holding him upright.
“He now uses a wheelchair; his hands have started to go and he can’t hold a pen or a knife and fork.
“He also gets lots of chest infections because of a weak immune system.
However, his spirits remain high – and he clearly thinks I'm a little unhinged for attempting this.
“It is just my hope that one day, with the help of the MS Society, if maybe not a cure, then at least a way to slow the effects down can be found.”
Mrs Hackling had initially been aiming to raise £500, but has already smashed her target and now has more than £600 in donations.
“It seemed like a good idea at the time,” she added. “I think it’ll be different, and more fun than a run, and I like the idea of getting really, really, muddy.”
