FORMER international footballer Paul Merson helped a village team celebrate its 10th anniversary in style.
The former Arsenal, Aston Villa and Portsmouth ace enjoyed a meal with Eckington Football Club players, staff and assembled guests at the event held at the Bell in Eckington on Friday, October 11, before giving an entertaining after-dinner speech.
Merson spoke about his time at various clubs, saying that Arsenal was the best team he played for, with Villa not far behind and that Dennis Bergkamp was the best player he had played with.
Although his story about living with Paul ‘Gazza’ Gascoigne and his friend ‘Jimmy five bellies’ when the two England stars were playing for Middlesbrough provided one of the biggest laughs of the evening.
As well as a fund-raising raffle, there was also an auction where guests could place bids on various items donated by players and local businesses.
Among the more popular lots to go under the hammer were a Red Bull Formula 1 racing team cap signed by Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber and a year’s supply of beer from Chipping Norton-based Beerbods.
The evening raised a total of £1,238, which will be split between the Midlands Air Ambulance and club funds.
