PLANS for five new homes in Broadway have come up against a barrage of criticism from villagers.

Wychavon District Council’s planning committee is set to discuss the development on land north of Springfield Cottage, Springfield Lane at a meeting this afternoon.

But the proposal for three private and two affordable homes, put forward by the Style and Codrington families, has come under fire with 68 letters of objection and just one in support.

Gordon Franks, chairman of Save Broadway Campaign, said they feared the plans would significantly increase the number of cars travelling along Springfield Lane.

“Springfield Lane’s entrance adjoins Back Lane which has to accommodate heavy delivery lorries servicing Budgens Supermarket, and rubbish disposal and recycling vehicles,” he said.

“There is no pavement and is already hazardous for pedestrians at the junction. It is not in the SWDP and would set a precedent for further building on neighbouring fields.”

Jeff Vincent, chairman of the Broadway Trust, said they were concerned the proposals are detrimental to the Conservation Area and are outside the development boundary.

“We just hope it gets kicked out,” he said. “We think it’s inappropriate development.”

Recommending it for approval, planning officer Anna Brindle said in her report: “Overall, the proposed development is considered to achieve an economic, social and environmental role.”
