  • "And for the record Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for sabotage, which he admitted, and conspiracy to overthrow the government through guerilla war, which he denied.

During the early 1960s, the ANC was, after much soul searching, driven in desperation to a militant campaign, mainly of sabotage, but was never a terrorist organisation. In contrast the apartheid government was an avowedly racist, white supremacist, and brutally totalitarian regime which committed massacres, torture and extra-judicial summary execution of its opponents.

Saying the ANC - and Mandela - were terrorists is like saying the French Resistance attacking the Nazis were terrorists.

Beyond the callous voices of the far-right who have never accepted the defeat of apartheid, Mandela will be remembered as a man of peace, conciliation and forgiveness, one of the greatest figures of the 20th century."
