  • "Actually I'm pretty reasonable and pretty liberal - but it has to be said that the ANC were very similar to the IRA in opposing an oppressive regime who had invaded their Country and taken control of it - much as the English had done to the Irish, as the UN has done to the Afghans.

To English eyes the republicans were terrorists, to Boer eyes, the ANC were that too, and many look at the Taliban in the same light. It's only history that turns a terrorist into a freedom fighter, and as the winner normally writes history, of course the eventual winners of the fight against apartheid in South Africa (which included the enlightened western world) will write the history regarding Mandela.

But to the people he was trying to overthrow, he must have seemed to be the devil incarnate.

Thinking about the way we felt about IRA murderers of the 1970's and 80's, should those responsible have got life imprisonment - maybe serving 25-27 years. We are still looking for those responsible for the Birmingham bombings - so if caught what sort of sentence would we think reasonable - maybe a Mandela equaling 27 years would be appropriate!"
