A GROUP of Worcester people struggling with depression, stress, low self-confidence and other problems have spent five weeks learning a range of skills including how to build self-esteem and communication skills.

A group of between eight and 12 people have been attending weekly sessions at the Hive, Worcester, as part of the Taking Charge of Your Life scheme.

The initiative, run by Re-late Worcestershire, helps those taking part to build skills to help them get the best out of their lives.

Ann Davies said she had decided to attend the government-funded course – which is run in five weekly sessions – after she suffered a serious illness earlier this year.

“When I came out of hospital I decided to do this course to try to help me get my confidence back and help me feel better about myself,” she said.

“It’s really helped me come to terms with what’s happened to me.”

“I’ve been able to get back to where I was.”

The 34-year-old said the work carried out with the help of tutor Corinne Rover-Parkes had given her a range of skills which would help her in the future.

“My main aim is to up my confidence and get myself together,” she said.

“We’ve done a lot about developing communication skills and motivation.

“Anyone who’s struggling with any situation in life should consider it.

“It doesn’t matter if you come on your own – after five weeks we’re like a big family here. I’ve really started seeing life in a different way.”

During the course, the group completed a workbook learning different techniques including managing stress and time as well as coping with change and finding job opportunities.

Anna Smith, aged 28, also attended the Open College Network-accredited course and said it had helped her build her confidence and other skills.

“It’s all about taking charge,” she said. “If you’ve had relationship issues and been put down, for example. I’ve learned quite a lot.”

Tracey Clarke, aged 42, said she agreed.

“It’s about meeting new people and building self esteem,” she said.
