A DETERMINED runner is hoping to raise £1million for two good causes — and break a world record in the process.

Scott Morton, aged 45, of Badsey, is attempting to run 874 miles between Land’s End and John O’Groats faster than it has ever been run before.

Setting off from Land’s End at 5am on Thursday, August 14, next year he will aim to reach the finger post at John O’Groats in nine days, two hours and 26 minutes, which would set a new world record.

The father-of-three is taking on the challenge of a lifetime to raise money for Parkinson’s UK and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

“My motivation to take on this challenge is two-fold,” he said.

“In 2005 my mother lost her three year battle with breast cancer.

“If the battle was decided upon strength of spirit and unflinching positivity she would have won. Unfortunately, cancer does not respect such qualities.

“Secondly my mother-in-law, Roma, has been living with Parkinson’s since 1988, at the relatively young age of 44.

“To watch Roma live with such a degenerative condition with courage, determination and a greater concern for others than herself puts my challenge into perspective.

“I am going to battle with a physically arduous challenge for a mere nine days. Roma has battled with her condition for the last 25 years and she continues to resist its onslaught.”

Paul Jackson-Clark, director of fundraising at Parkinson’s UK, said: “Running from Land’s End to John O’Groats is a huge undertaking, and when you factor in long uphill stretches in a short space of time, the gravity of Scott’s challenge becomes clear.

“As well as raising vital funds, Scott will also be helping to raise awareness of Parkinson’s.”

Kath Abrahams, director of engagement and Income generation at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, added that Mr Morton is an inspiration to everyone.

“The money he plans to raise will make a huge impact to our vital work .”
