Head turning school around

A HEADTEACHER has been credited with turning around a school that was found to be inadequate in January.
Ofsted inspectors said Fladbury First School head Julie Wilson and the governors were doing a good job and driving improvement at a fast pace, particularly since September.
The comments came in the school’s second monitoring inspection.
Ofsted inspectors found the quality of education at the school in the village near Pershore had markedly improved since January after changes to teaching, curriculum and leadership practices.
Staff changes – including two teachers and two teaching assistants leaving in July and two new teachers and one new teaching assistant arriving – had significantly improved the quality of teaching and learning.
Teaching and learning in Years 1-4 was improving with inadequate teaching eradicated.
Inspectors also found clear and ambitious targets had been set so pupils could catch up. Minor weaknesses found in a previous monitoring inspection had been remedied.
Training of governors had improved the governing body’s knowledge, skills and understanding and the head was now providing a high quality analysis of the pupils’ attainment and progress in every year.
New English and mathematics leaders had reduced the amount of support needed from the local authority and others.
However, inspectors also found teachers did not always establish what pupils could and could not do before planning work and assessment information was not always used effectively to inform lesson planning.
The planning for activities that children did on their own in the Early Years Foundation Stage was also not comprehensive enough.
While the monitoring of teaching records did not contain enough information about the quality of learning and the impact teaching is making on pupils’ progress.
Mrs Wilson said she was delighted with the report.
She said: “We have a very focused approach. We have a great team and have been lucky enough to recruit two very experienced class teachers to complement our existing Early Years staff, as well as additional teaching assistant support.
“With our small classes and fantastic facilities, we have managed to take a huge leap forward with good results across all classes. It’s a pleasure to be head at such a lovely village school. Fladbury pupils are a delight to work with and I’m thrilled with our progress to date.
My aim is to make the school outstanding.”
