A HEROIC mum who saved a man’s life when she put out the flames on his skin and dragged him from his burning bungalow is up for a top national award.

Tracey Marriott has been nominated for an ‘adult hero award’ at the Spirit of Fire Awards.

The awards will take place in London in May following a reception at Downing Street.

We have previously reported how Mrs Marriott, aged 49, and daughter Lucy, 18, had settled down to watch TV when they heard a fire alarm at their neighbour’s home in Heathfield Road, Norton, near Evesham on August 12 last year.

Once outside they could see flames through the front window of their neighbour’s home – owned by George Thomas Moir, known as Tom. His bedroom was on fire.

They entered the bungalow and Mrs Marriott could see Tom was sat on his bed with the curtains and bedding around him on fire. When the fire service arrived several minutes later Mrs Marriott, helped by her daughter, had managed to extinguish Tom’s clothing and bring him outside.

Mrs Marriott said: “I was very shocked and surprised to be nominated. I don’t really know how I feel about it.

“I didn’t go into that fire thinking about being a hero – I went to go in and save a man’s life.” Sadly the 64-year-old, who suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sustained burns and smoke inhalation, died in St Richard’s Hospice on August 29.
