Upton Bridge remains closed

DRIVERS in Upton-upon-Severn are reminded that the Upton bridge (A4104) remains closed to all traffic.

A number of drivers have reportedly been putting themselves and others at risk by ignoring road closure signs.

A statement by West Mercia Police said it was thought that they may have been travelling along the route under the mistaken belief that it had reopened, following incorrect rumours.

A shuttle truck, run by the military, remains in operation over the bridge while it is closed to traffic to enable pedestrians to still come and go from the town.

Well, there weren't incorrect rumors when myself and three other vehicles travelled through it yesterday afternoon. I arrived from the a38 end, in my 4x4 with another 4x4 in front and a van behind. I urgently needed to get to Upton surgery and the army were waving us all through, just asking us to drive sensibly. This we duly did, around 3-4mph and got through no issue. I got to the surgery to collect medication and then went to return through only to be told it had been closed for "inspection" by the council.

I questioned how that could have happened in less than 5 minutes to be told "it's just the way it is". I thanked the young lad, stood there in the pouring rain, as I knew it wasn't his fault and he was just following orders. It had even been mentioned on Sally traffic on Radio 2 that it was open to 4x4's and tall vehicles so they couldn't have been incorrect rumors, more likely someone jumped the gun and communicated something they shouldn't have.

There are no homes along that route and we weren't creating excessive bow waves so there were no additional damages being caused and it also would help alleviate a lot of the traffic having to detour through Welland, Callow End and Powick which is a detour of about 15 miles to get to Kempsey.

Crazy!!!!
