A DEVELOPMENT of five houses will go ahead despite concerns it will look "horrible".

The style and design of the planned homes on land at Homestead, Halfkey Road, Malvern, came under fire from members of Malvern Hills District Council's southern area development management committee on Wednesday.

Cllr Paul Tuthill said he thought the design of the properties was "horrible" and it looked "like it has been blown in from North Site" as it failed to pick up on the character of some existing nearby properties.

Cllr Janet Marriott said residents feared the erosion of the significant gap between Malvern and Leigh Sinton but added the committee was "unable to demonstrate a viable reason for refusal".

Calls were also made to ensure the council asked for the best quality materials be used, with the proposed wood cladding being among the items criticised by members.

The application from Mr and Mrs EJ Driffill was approved by 14 votes to two, with one abstention.
