Plans for care home labelled "eyesore"

EVESHAM Ambulance Station is not set to be transformed into a 65 bed care home just yet after planners gave it a thumbs down at a recent meeting calling the proposed building an "eye sore".

Councillors at Wychavon District Council planning committee said they didn't want to see the care home built on the prominent site on the corner of Davies Road and Cheltenham Road.

The application by Restful Homes Developments would have seen a three storey brick building with a two storey section on the site where the ambulance station is currently situated.

The ambulance station was put on the market in January last year after a decision was made to close a number of sites across the county and replace them with fleet maintenance hubs and a community station in Evesham.

But councillors rejected the first plans to come forward for the site saying it was too imposing.

Cllr Wendy Dyke said she had concerns about traffic exiting and entering the site

"When I first heard they wanted to put a care home on here I though that's great," she said. "The traffic survey was done last September when the college was on its summer break and the bridge was closed. So I don't think we can take notice of that.

"The entrance is partly in the same place but there isn't a keep clear.

"In terms of open space the garden where they will go to sit is right next to the car park. That's going to be noisy and fumy.

"It's also far too big and not in keeping with the area at all."

Cllr Reg Jakeman agreed, he said: "It needs moving back. Park on the Cheltenham Road and anyone living there could put their hand out the window and shake hands with people walking past.

"It's going to be a complete eyesore and currently should not go ahead as it stands."

But Cllr Judy Pearce said she couldn't see anything wrong with it.

"I know it's big and I know it will need some getting used to. I think they have taken in the house next door. I think it will be shocking when it goes up. But people will get used to it."
