YOUNG apprentices from Worcestershire who have taken their first steps on the career ladder with the organisation responsible for commissioning health services in the county have thrown their support behind the scheme.

The NHS South Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has taken on a number of young apprentices over the past few years and as part of this week’s National Apprenticeship Week two of them have spoken about the value of the scheme.

Nicole Pinder, aged 18, from Worcester is currently working with the primary care and communications teams as a business apprentice and said it had been a valuable experience.

“I decided to apply for the apprenticeship scheme following my A-levels, as I felt the time wasn’t right to go to university,” she said. “The scheme has offered me a great opportunity to gain experience in a working environment, helping to build my skills and knowledge.

“The apprenticeship scheme has not only benefitted me, but it also benefits the organisation that you work for.

“It would be nice to see more of these schemes, giving young people the same opportunity that I am benefitting from.”

Cheralyyn Roe from Powick previously carried out an apprenticeship with the CCG and now works for the organisation as an administrative support officer.

The 20-year-old said she was glad she opted to take up an apprenticeship.

“I have learnt so much and have taken my first steps on the career ladder,” she said.

“I would recommend becoming an apprentice to anyone who prefers to learn in a busy working environment where you can pick up new practical skills.”

George Stringer, aged 21, from Worcester also completed an apprenticeship with the CCG in 2012 and now works for the organisation as a communications support officer.

The CCG’s director of corporate and organisational development Lucy Noon said the scheme had benefited both the young people involved and the organisation.

“It offers a great opportunity for work-based learning whilst at the same time helping to develop in-house talent, providing a bright future for the CCG,” she said.
