THE Royal British Legion in Evesham is seeking information on war veterans, medals and the town branch's standard to help them as they prepare an exhibit to commemorate the start of World War 1.

Jeff King, former chairman of the legion, has limited information on a number of items and people involved in the Great War, which began in July 1914.

Now he is hoping some people in the town can shed some more light on the history behind them.

He said: "The first item I need information on is the Evesham and District War Veteran’s Association Standard.

"The only information is it was carried by the Late Don Jelfs, a dedicated member of the Evesham RBL. He was only able to tell me it was made by the Women of Fairfield in the then Church Hall on the corner of Mayfair and Battleton Road."

Mr King is hoping that seeing the standard, pictured, will jog someone's memory.

He is also creating a list of gallant heroes from Worcestershire who were awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth Forces.

"Any information on those who were born or were resident in Worcestershire before, during or after their service to the country will be most welcome," he added.

Lastly Mr King is seeking more detail about Cecil Knight-Coutts MC, who served in the Royal Field Artillery during WW1 and reached the rank of Captain.

Mr King said: "He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in 1917. On completion of his service he became the science teacher at Bengeworth School and his wife Gertrude was headmistress.

"Cecil was a dedicated member of the Evesham British Legion and also a special constable in the Evesham Police Force and gained the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for valued service to the community.

"Gertrude died in 1950 and Cecil died in 1971 at the ripe old age of 91. Hopefully this will stir a few memories from some Evesham citizens.

"I desperately want information on all three of the above topics. Please be kind enough to pass any information, no matter how trivial it may seem."
