PARKING charges will be slashed in two underused car parks in Evesham.

From May 1 two car parks in Bewdley Street and Chapel Street will be reducing their charges by 50 percent.

This is following a decision at Wychavon’s Executive Board on Tuesday, March 18.

The cuts will be in place for a three month trial to measure the impact on usage and to support the town following the re-opening of the bridge.

Councillor Bob Banks, board member for resources, said: "During the bridge works we helped support the reduction of car parking fees which did bring a slight increase in parking.

"We want to measure the impact of these reductions to inform a wider review of parking charges in the future."

Cllr Gerry O’Donnell, chairman of the council and Evesham Market Town Partnership, added: "This is a great move by Wychavon, retailers have encouraged the council to be innovative with its parking charging strategy with the aim of ensuring that all car parks are used effectively and provide a real choice for customers.

"We will wait with interest to see the impact that it has on car park usage figures and the local economy."
