Elgar's music to feature heavily during BBC Proms 2014

THE BBC's annual celebration of classical music comes with a healthy dose of Elgar this year.

Work from Worcestershire's most famous son will feature in a number of concerts at the BBC Proms 2014, which runs from Friday, July 18 to Saturday, September 13, including the opening and closing nights at the Royal Albert Hall.

Global music is at the heart of this year's proms but Sir Edward Elgar's biblical oratorio The Kingdom – the beautiful ‘slow movement’ of a musical triptych that started with The Apostles, but that would remain unfinished at his death - signals the start of the festival.

Sir Andrew Davis, a conductor laureate of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, returns in his 70th-birthday year and is joined by a distinguished cast of soloists for the occasion.

The popularity of the composer's work 80 years since his death is reflected in it appearing in a further eight concerts, including the iconic Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 will get the flags waving in patriotic fashion as the words of Land of Hope and Glory are sung.
