AN optician has been inspired to open his own business in Bidford after battling life threatening cancer.

Richard Fantom, aged 43, decided to open an independent optometrist opens in the centre of Bidford on Monday, April 14, just a year after battling Burkitt's Lymphoma.

He said he was inspired to take the leap by his family and patients and is now the proud owner of Richard Fantom Eyecare.

"I have had amazing support from my patients," said Mr Fantom, who has practised as an optometrist for 21 years.

"I received about 80 cards from my patients when I was ill and that was very inspiring. I realised people really did care about me. Obviously my family are my main inspiration.

"It all spurred me on to take on this and hopefully do a better job of taking care of my patients."

Mr Fantom will personally perform NHS Sight Tests both in the practice and at home for eligible patients, comprehensive eye examinations, contact lens fitting and aftercare.

He added: "I'm very excited about opening my new practice. I want to serve great eye care to my patients from the very young to the very old. I'll be using new technology whenever it helps whether for better service, to help me examine eyes more effectively or to produce better spectacles and contact lenses."
