PEOPLE in Worcestershire are being encouraged to do their bit for the environment by composting their waste.

As part of International Compost Awareness Week, Worcestershire County Council has teamed up with Hereford Council and getcomposting.com to offer compost bins at a fraction of the normal price.

Bins are already available from the council at a cut price, but they are now being offered at buy one get one half price, meaning residents can buy two for £39, including delivery – a saving of more than 80 per cent.

The council’s cabinet member for the environment Cllr Anthony Blagg said: "I have used a couple of the subsidised compost bins myself for several years.

“They are really very easy to use and are effective at reducing your garden waste and help divert a lot of vegetable kitchen waste from landfill."

Senior waste prevention officer with Worcestershire County Council Stephen Ackers said more than 30 per cent of the average household bin can be composted.

"This is a great incentive to encourage more residents to get composting and set up their own composting communities sharing the rewards,” he said.

“Home composting organic waste also helps to significantly reduce carbon emissions and can also be used as an effective and sustainable waste management method to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.”
