Evesham Journal: Boaters given safety advice Boaters given safety advice

BOATERS who plan to be out and about on the water in Worcestershire are being reminded to be careful.

As part of next week’s Boat Safety Week Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) is encouraging people to take care while on rivers or canals in the region.

As part of the annual awareness week boat owners are being reminded to make sure they understand the risks before making a trip, to regularly check their vessels and to always follow engine and appliance operating guidelines.

HWFRS station commander Alan Haley said: “While boat fires are relatively infrequent in our service area they do have the potential for devastating consequences and so we would urge all boat users to take note of the advice above and do everything they can to stay safe.”

Information leaflets will be available at boat yards and marinas to alert people to the risks of boating.

Over the last 20 years 60 boaters have died in boat fires or incidents involving carbon monoxide.
