PERSHORE Carnival raised £1,784.10 for two local charities when it took over the town on Bank Holiday Monday.

The popular event was collecting cash for the Midlands Air Ambulance and Acorns Children's Hospice and organisers were delighted with the amount raised.

The donations were collected on the day by volunteers and those taking part in the carnival.

Two collectors a fireman and seven-year-old Sam Shepherd who collected £196.09 and £143.31.

Colin Shepherd, chairman of the carnival committee, said he was disappointed with complaints made about the event and encouraged people who felt they could contribute to the event to attend the annual general meeting when it is held in July. A date will be confirmed nearer the event.

He added: "We thank all those lovely people who have stopped members of our committee to say what a magnificent carnival it was and that they had a fantastic day out, free of charge."
