GENEROUS supporters of an open garden event in Evesham have raised £1,250 for a children's cancer charity.

Ann Evans, who opened her gates as part of the Hampton Open Garden event on June 8, said she was really pleased with the support from the community

Mrs Evans, aged 72, of Pershore Road, in Hampton, opened her garden as part of the event to raise money for CLIC Sargent, which looked after her nine-year-old granddaughter, Lara Cole, when she was diagnosed with leukaemia.

The grandmother said a surprise visit on the day from her granddaughter and her family, who have not left their home in Cornwall for two-and-a-half years because of Lara's treatment, was the icing on the cake.

"It was a very emotional day for me," she said. "It was a total and utter surprise. They had planned it for about six weeks. I was able to say to people, this little girl is what it's all about.

"But not only her but 10 children every day who are diagnosed with cancer. A very big thank you to all the people that supported it. Lots of local people from Hampton but other people from further afield as well."
