A CHARITY football match and fun day is being held in Broadway this weekend to raise money for a young boy who is severely disabled.

Broadway United are playing Paul West's Evesham Allstars at Broadway Milestone Ground, Childswickham Road, Broadway, on Saturday (June 28) with kick off at 1.30pm.

Gates will open at noon for the fun day, with attractions including a barbecue and bar, face painting, bouncy castle, a car show and auction and ice-cream from Mickleton-based Abigail's Vintage Scoop.

As previously reported, Natasha and Darren Wheatley-Hunt, of Broadway, are hoping to raise £20,000 towards converting their double garage into a downstairs bedroom and funding sensory equipment for their son, Samuel.

The three-and-a-half-year-old suffers with a visual impairment and global development delay and has reduced muscle strength meaning he cannot walk or support himself and has difficulty talking.

His parents are hoping the new equipment will massively improve their son's quality of life and hopefully stimulate his development.

"It's been an awful lot of organising but I'm hoping for a great turnout," said Mrs Wheatley-Hunt, 28. "Everybody has donated their time."

Since launching the fundraising appeal, the couple have raised £3,000 towards their target thanks to the generosity of people in the community.

This includes more than £100 from the darts team at the Queen's Head, in Sedgeberrow, £250 from Hillbarn Sawmills, Snowsill, and £2,000 from a 24-hour dartathon.

Mrs Wheatley-Hunt said she was overwhelmed with the support they had received.

"Local firms have been helping with donations or people that know us and have heard of our story," she said. "It's been really nice. Despite the credit crunch, quite a lot of people have been helpful.

"It's just nice people have been able to respond."

Tickets for the fundraiser are £5 for adults and £2.50 for concessions. See facebook.com/helpsamuelroom or donate at justgiving.com/Samuels-sensory-appeal.
