AN Evesham man is celebrating his 40th year by taking on three challenges for different charities.

Richard Hobbs, of Hampton, marked his 40th birthday in October last year and vowed to do something over the coming 12 months to raise at least £9,000 for Cancer Research UK, Birmingham Children's Hospital and Bethany's Wish.

His inspiration came at the end of 2012 when his close friend Vincent was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 19.

Seeing what he had to go through at a time when he should be enjoying life inspired Richard to come up with Triple Challenge 2014 and help charities linked to cancer and young people.

And the challenge became extra poignant when earlier this year Vincent succumbed to his cancer and died, aged 20.

Mr Hobbs also decided to support the Birmingham's Children Hospital as three years ago they saved the life of his nephew Ellis after he was born with a 1 in 20 million heart defect, and required open heart surgery at eight days old. The hospital’s current fundraising appeal is to raise £4 million to build a new cancer unit.

To raise the money he set three different targets, the London Marathon in April, a 403 mile cycle in July and the Cotswold Classic Triathalon in August.

Speaking after the cycle ride he said: "The cycle ride went very well. I totalled 403 miles and managed to dodge all the forecast rain except for the morning of the final day."

Mr Hobbs travelled from Anglesey in Wales to Cromer in Norfolk to complete the cycle, which pushed his total fundraising to £3,000.

He added: "My final challenge is on August 31 when I take on my first triathlon, a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run. The triathlon is fairly local at Cotswold Water Park in South Cerney.

"I will finish the year off with a charity night on October 18, which will involve a race night and raffle."
