MYSTERY surrounds a meeting about the future of the Royal British Legion Club in Lowesmoor although there are rumours the club could close.

A member who declined to be named told your Worcester News there was a meeting at the club in 86A Lowesmoor Place, Worcester, at 8pm this Friday to discuss the club's future. The man said he wanted as many people as possible to attend the meeting to raise their concerns and do what they could to safeguard the club's future.

He said: "It is in your own interest for everyone to turn up to help save the club from closure."

However, when we called the club we were advised to speak to the club secretary at his home and he said: "No comment, no comment, I have no comment at all."

Another contact within the Royal British Legion said: "I have only heard rumours to date and I am still in the dark."

The club is open 7.30pm to 11pm on weekdays, noon to 2.30pm and 7.30pm to 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

David Waldron, Worcestershire county chairman of the Royal British Legion, said there were effectively two different identities for the Royal British Legion - the club and the branch.

He said: "We have no jurisdiction over the club whatsoever. I do know that there is a meeting but I don't know the ins and outs. I have kept out of it as I have no jurisdiction. It is the club not the branch - the branch will still function. I really don't know what the problem is. All I know is that the Midland regional club manager is coming, presumably to chair this meeting. The meeting is purely for club members. Before you can join a club you have to be a member of a particular branch. A lot of people think the club is the legion - it isn't. The club is a private venture. Most are limited companies in their own right. The branch is still functioning - it is the club which is in difficulties. The branch will function. It is the club that is in trouble, to what degree I don't know."
