Evesham woman comes to defence of doctor

First published in News

AN EVESHAM woman has thrown her support behind her doctor after it was revealed he had been handed a warning for repeatedly failing to refer a patient who later died of cancer.

This week it was revealed Dr Stephen Grant of Abbey Medical Practice in Evesham has been given a warning by the General Medical Council (GMC) for failing to refer a patient who later died of rib and spine cancer.

Although the GMC said Dr Grant's care "fell seriously below the standard expected of a reasonably competent GP", long-time patient Claire Perkins of South Littleton, who was diagnosed with Chron's disease last year, described him as "a fantastic doctor".

"If it wasn't for Dr Grant's urgent referral and high standard of care I could have been in a critical condition with a burst bowel," she said.

The 28-year-old added Dr Grant had been "so supportive" during her treatment and diagnosis.

"I will continue using Dr Grant as my GP for as long as he is practising and only hope that other patients of his that know his high standard of care will support him through what must be a unpleasant time," she said.

Dr Grant was handed the GMC warning in July last year and it will remain on his record until July 2018.

In 2007 Dr Grant was criticised by a coroner following the death of an elderly patient who he had not tested for the infection C. difficile.

But the coroner's comments prompted a flood of letters of support to the Evesham Journal from patients praising Dr Grant's care.

In my experience when I was younger I saw Dr Grant and he was awful. From the notes on the full newspaper report this wasn't the first incident with his incompetency. A life has gone that he should have helped to save.

This is a witch hunt.. How many lives has Dr Grant saved during his career?
Of course this can't be published and the Daily Wail just love scaremongering and biased reporting. This is the same newspaper complaining that Dr's have only 20 min appointments to diagnose a patient
I know of at least 2 local surgeries who's Dr's have misdiagnosed stage 4 cancer as something trivial in the first instance. In both cases the people died within 6 months. It happens
No one in any vocation will be 100% perfect everytime .
I am a patient at The Abbey Medical Practice and I would prefer to see Dr grant every time if given the choice

If the GMC said the Dr's 'standard fell seriously below the standard expected of a doctor', then this Council ought to know, and patients ought to be given the chance to vote with their feet.

The unfair and slanderous representation of Dr.Grant in the Daily Mail was absolutely disgraceful! Frankly I'd like to believe that the Evesham Journal would provide an unbiased and true account, but sadly I have been let down. I side entirely with 'Evesham Girl' and believe that this is one of many unsubstantiated "Witch Hunts" which have been twisted to appease the disgruntled and pessimistic readers of the Daily Wail. Dr Grant is an exceptional doctor and if Rita Jelfs wasn't so quick to believe everything she reads out of context, then she would see using websites such as http://www.nhs.uk/Se

ve that Abbey Medical Practice is the best in the area and certainly one of the best in Worcestershire! Maybe, perhaps in the future, people will use these objective websites (instead of relying on partisan and twisted articles), vote with their feet, and continue to walk into Abbey and appreciate the staff and what service they provide, which is far above the national average.
